What is cotton yarn?

Cotton is a natural fibre made up of cellulose, a material found mainly in wood. Cotton is transformed into yarn, which is then woven into fabric. Cotton is the most widely produced fibre in the world, and is mainly produced in China and India. Today, cotton yarn is the most widely used yarn in the fashion industry. That’s why cotton yarns are in great demand for knitting and crocheting projects !

Cotton yarn, an essential crochet or knitting yarn for summer

Unlike wool yarn, which is recommended for winter projects, cotton yarn is widely used for knitting or crocheting in summer. Thanks to its breathable, comfortable texture, a ball of Cotton yarn is particularly suitable for making summer projects, lightweight garments or sustainable, eco-responsible accessories. To be worked with a crochet hook or knitting needles, cotton yarn balls have an undeniable absorbent quality that makes them ideal for making bath or household linen. And if you’re into embroidery, a ball of cotton thread is also a great ally ! Cotton thread can also be combined with other wool yarns, such as Merino wool, Alpaca wool or Mohair wool, to create an original and more substantial piece of work.

What are the differences between combed and mercerised cotton yarn ?

Combed cotton yarn, unlike conventional cotton yarn, is much softer to the touch and more resistant to washing, thanks to its long, quality fibres that are more easily entangled. These advantages make Combed Cotton yarn a superior quality yarn, as well as being stronger and more durable. Combed Cotton yarn also has other advantages, such as its delicate appearance, absorbency and freshness. What’s more, combed cotton knitting yarns are hypoallergenic ! Balls of mercerised cotton yarn have a higher sheen and are more tightly woven, making them much more resistant than balls of conventional cotton yarn. What’s more, products made with mercerised cotton yarn don’t shrink in the wash, thanks to its absorbent properties ! Mercerised Cotton yarn can be used for the finest needlework and crochet work, making it ideal for crocheting and knitting all kinds of creations.

Cotton yarn, an ecological and ethical knitting yarn

Cotton can be grown using either conventional or organic methods, which determines its environmental impact. Some of our yarns are therefore made from organic cotton. Organic cotton yarn has the dual advantage of being both ecological and environmentally ethical. What’s more, the quality of cotton yarn varies according to a number of characteristics, such as the length and maturity of the fibre that makes up the yarn. As a result, a cotton yarn made from a long fibre will be more expensive than one made from a shorter fibre.

Which cotton thread to choose for embroidery ?

For embroidery enthusiasts, it’s essential to choose the right cotton thread for the best results. It’s best to use a regular, high-quality cotton thread of a uniform colour. There are several types of cotton thread, each with its own specific characteristics depending on the fabric you are working with. Firstly, ground cotton thread, also known as 6-ply cotton thread, is the perfect embroidery thread because it is very versatile and has a shiny appearance. Then there’s pearl cotton thread, which is shinier and thicker, making it easier to work with for those who are new to embroidery. Finally, you can opt for a Wool Cotton thread, which is also very shiny, soft and strong, making it ideal for creating covers, cushions, table mats, etc. On our online site, La Lainière de Wazemmes, you can find a range of balls in stock made from cotton thread and perfectly suited to embroidery. Among our threads, you can choose the MAX ball from Annell in 100% quality cotton, with its plain white or ecru thread, or the COTON CROCHET 10 ball from Lammy Yarns, available in 36 colours!
