Alpaca wool, a noble wool with multiple properties

Also known as Alpaca Wool, Alpaca Wool fibres belong to a category of noble wools that are rather top-of-the-range and of very high quality. It has a soft, silky appearance that adds a beautiful sheen to your knitted or crocheted creations. They are also light and strong. Unlike a product made from sheep’s wool yarn, a product made from Alpaca Wool yarn has hypoallergenic properties that are ideal for sensitive skin or for the skin of a baby or young child.

Baby Alpaca Wool for gentle knitting or crocheting

A ball of Alpaca Wool is distinguished by its fineness, similar to Cashmere, with a fibre diameter of between 12 and 30 microns. However, the main characteristic of alpaca wool is its softness. Indeed, the fleece of young alpacas, known as “baby alpacas”, makes Alpaca Wool fibre extremely soft. If you want to benefit from all the qualities offered by Alpaca Wool yarns, opt for a pure Baby Alpaca yarn or a classic Alpaca Wool yarn mixed with a Silk yarn such as the ALPAKA SEIDE ball from Prima Lana, with a hairy yarn such as Mohair with the MARIANA ball from Austermann, or with a Merino Wool yarn such as the ANDES 4.5 ball from Textiles de la Marque.

Suri Alpaca Wool yarn, perfect for warding off the winter chill

There’s also Suri Alpaca Wool: Suri Alpaca is a variety of alpaca, and the wool fibres from this animal are highly reputed for being shinier, wavier and rarer than classic Alpaca Wool fibres. What’s more, Suri Alpaca Wool fibres offer great protection against the cold. However, the maintenance of these yarns is more complex. Suri Alpaca Wool yarns share some characteristics with Mohair Wool yarns, as both animals have very long fleeces and very strong fibres. This means you can use very fine yarns for crochet, weaving and lace knitting.
